“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.”
Orphaned as a young child, Jane lives a lonely existence with her aunt and cousins. She attends Lowood School, a harsh and unforgiving school for girls. Her fortunes appear to improve, however, when she is employed as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she works for the elusive Mr Rochester. It seems in Thornfield she might at last have a real home, and finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Rochester. Yet as their acquaintance deepens, she comes to discover that all is not what is seems. Rochester’s past is quite as troubled as his present, and his secrets (however well kept) might still have the power to threaten what happiness Jane has found.
