I have recently started looking into the history of Guyana, the birthplace of my gran'mutha. Before this book I did not think about the origin of my mother country. This book drove me to take the simple step of reading a Wikipedia page and looking for a YouTube video on the subjects origin. In just a 2 hour audible book Jamaica Kincaid has pushed me to reflect. To investigate the roots of a nation my that gain sovereignty in 1966. My gran'mutha would have been 30 years old. 2 years older than me right now. Kincaid enlightened me on how recently my people gained there independence. After listening to this book, I felt hollow. How could I have made it this many years into my life without looking back with pride at how far Guyana has come? Why haven't I spoken to my family, or asked questions? This book makes my want to investigate and document. I hope it does the same for you.
